History & inspiration
Born in Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne in 1727, Philibert Commerson was a physician, explorer and naturalist. He took part in Bougainville’s voyage around the world, commissioned by King Louis XV in 1766. During his expeditions, he discovered numerous plant species that would become famous, including the hydrangea and the petunia. More than 100 plant species now bear his name.
This traditionally Bresse-style room is a tribute to Commerson’s childhood in Châtillon. Immersed in the spirit of Grimm’s tales and local stories, it is also rooted in the craftsmanship of master woodworkers and in the regional traditions of half-timbering, limewashed wood and aged plaster.
