The Dombes
The Dombes is a plateau with 1200 ponds, and used to be a principality that began at the gates of Châtillon. It is a marvellous natural reserve for the people of water and air.
Birds and fish are the guests of honour, and plants and trees are also important. The Villars les Dombes bird park offers a fantastic concentrate of the area. Its ponds were created by Benedictine and Carthusian monks and have made it possible to live off fishing, while others went hunting. That is also why the Dombes area is a land of gastronomy, as confirmed by the Restaurant Georges Blanc in Vonnas. The Dombes area offers many other surprises as well, such as the medieval city of Pérouges or Ars, the village of the saint and Curé. But you can discover all that as you take the road of the ponds of the Dombes
